FOUR THOUSAND ISLANDS
/ by Suthep Kritsanavarin. Four Thousand Islands, in southern Laos, is one of the last regions where the Mekong River runs virtually untamed. Still free from the building of dams, navigation projects, and the habitat destruction that has increased the threat to the survival of one of the most diverse fish faunas in the world. Fishermen still use traditional nets and traps to catch as many fish as possible during the migration seasons in Si Phan Don, as the region is known locally. But how long will that last? OnAsia photographer Suthep Kritsanavarin has been documenting the area for more than three years and he has recently returned with more amazing images showing rare glimpses of a recently discovered species of fish, the wonderfully named, Wallago Micropogon.
